Emmit Kill

Mississippi, 1955. Emmit is fourteen, gentle, polite, and wearing his best tie. He smiles at everyone. He has never heard of the rules every Black child in Harlow learns before he learns to read — because Emmit isn’t from Mississippi, and he isn’t from Earth. One word to a white store clerk turns the whole town against him. When night falls the men come with lanterns and rifles, thinking they’re hunting a boy. They have no idea what they just woke up.

Meet Emmit

Not from Mississippi. Not from Earth.

Emmit came to Earth knowing nothing of hatred. He understands mathematics, gravity, the pressure of water in a pipe. He has studied thousands of human words. Nobody warned him about hello.
